PRIMARY PURPOSE:

 

Provide supplemental instructional support services to English Language Learners (ELLs). Assist the teacher in the preparation and management of classroom activities and administrative requirements for bilingual/ESL students.  Work under the supervision of a certified teacher. Tutor students in the bilingual/ESL programs. Work with bilingual/ESL parents on academic concerns for their child. Plan and promote bilingual parent involvement opportunities.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

                Minimum Education/Certification

                High School Diploma or equivalent

Have completed at least two years of study at an institution of higher education; have obtained an associate’s (or higher) degree; OR have met a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate, through a formal state or local academic assessment

  •   knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics or
  •   knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics readiness, as appropriate.

                Ability to work well with children/students

                Effective communication and interpersonal skills

 

                Minimum Experience

                Some experience working with children

               

                SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  •  Ability to speak, read, and write Spanish and English fluently
  •  Ability to work with English language learners’ needs and ability to work with other adults
  •  Ability to work with individuals and groups of students to support academics and behavior management
  •  Ability to learn new skills, flexibility, and willingness to perform a variety of tasks
  •  Works well with others, follows  written and oral directions
  •  Ability to communicate effectively, present information, and respond to questions from administrators, students, staff, and the general    public   consistent with the duties of the position
  •  Ability in mathematical skills to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure consistent with the duties of this position
  •  Ability to maintain student confidentiality
  •  Ability to communicate effectively with parents

 

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

  •     Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and state and local board policy
  •     Assist the teacher in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays
  •     Work with individual students or small groups to conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher
  •     Assist with orientation, administration and scoring of objective testing instruments or work assignments
  •     Keep the teacher informed of any special needs or problems of individual students
  •     Assist in supervising students throughout the school day, both inside and outside the classroom
  •     Assist in maintaining a neat and orderly classroom
  •     Assist in inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment
  •     Assist the teacher in keeping administrative records and preparing required reports
  •     Participate in in-service training programs, faculty meetings, and special events, as needed
  •     Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers
  •     Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor(s)

WORKING CONDITIONS:

 

                Reading; ability to communicate effectively (verbal)

                Maintain emotional control under stress

                Moderate standing, stooping, bending, and lifting

 

                Depending upon assignment, may require assisting students with transfers in and out of a wheelchair; some lifting of students who have limited or no mobility; assisting students with tasks such as dressing, eating and personal hygiene

 

                Depending upon assignment, work in classroom environments ranging from standard to intellectually disabled (mild, severe, and/or profound); students' physical abilities ranging from  mild to profound, students with no limitations to students with severe physical impairments

 

Depending upon assignment, provide assistance in transporting children to and from school and on field trips.
